BOTOX® Cosmetic vs. Dysport®: What’s the Difference?

Chances are you’ve heard about the wrinkle-reducing effects of BOTOX and Dysport. At my Orlando-area practice, these injectables are continually growing in popularity, thanks to their quick treatment times, affordability, and great results.

But what is the difference between them, and how can you decide which one is right for you? Let’s take a closer look.

What Are BOTOX & Dysport Used For?

BOTOX and Dysport are injectable neurotoxins that work in similar ways, using botulinum toxin A to reduce dynamic wrinkles. They both relax the muscles in your face that form lines when they contract repeatedly over time. You may notice these lines when you squint (crow’s feet), frown (glabellar lines), or raise your eyebrows (forehead lines).

BOTOX is FDA-approved to treat a few more areas than Dysport is. BOTOX is approved for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet, whereas Dysport is approved only for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines.

Which Product Works Faster?

Dysport typically works faster than BOTOX. Dysport takes 1 to 2 days to take effect, whereas BOTOX takes 3 to 5 days. For this reason, Dysport may be a better choice if you plan to attend a big event in the next few days. (Learn more about scheduling treatments before important events in my previous blog post.)

Which Product Lasts Longer?

Most people find that Dysport lasts longer than BOTOX. Dysport typically lasts around 4 months, and BOTOX lasts about 3 months. However, it’s important to remember that your timeline may vary slightly depending on how quickly your body processes the product.

Which Product Is More Cost-Effective?

Pricing for BOTOX and Dysport is typically comparable, ranging between $250 and $600 per treatment. Both products are priced by the unit, so the price varies depending on the number of units injected. While Dysport costs less per unit, more units are often needed to achieve the best results. Because Dysport often lasts longer, however, it’s more cost-effective for most people.

How Do the Results Compare?

Both products offer similar reductions in dynamic wrinkles, allowing for smoother and younger-looking skin. Dysport spreads faster and more easily than BOTOX, so results may be less precise. This may be a drawback or a benefit, depending on the case.

In some areas, keeping the product in a precise area prevents drooping of surrounding muscles that can alter the results. In others, however, a spreading effect helps blend the treated area with the rest of the face, creating a more natural-looking result.

This is one of the reasons it’s so important to choose an injector who is experienced, qualified, and highly knowledgeable when it comes to facial anatomy. Selecting the right option for the right concern, and even combining them when appropriate, can make all the difference in your results.

At Primera, we only use FDA Approved products in the recommended doses so we achieve long-lasting and natural results. We show our patients the actual product box so they know they’re getting the real deal.
