Proven Techniques, Outstanding Results

BOTOX Cosmetic is an FDA-approved substance that is injected to minimize the appearance of wrinkles in both the upper and lower face. To understand how BOTOX works, it's important to understand how wrinkles work.

BOTOX Cosmetic treats "dynamic" wrinkles, which are caused by repetitive facial movements. These include crow's feet, which are caused by squinting or smiling, and glabellar lines, which form between the eyebrows and are caused by furrowing your brow or frowning. Of course, we can't selectively avoid making facial expressions forever just to reduce the chance of developing wrinkles. This is where BOTOX Cosmetic becomes useful. The active ingredient in BOTOX, a neurotoxin called OnabotulinumtoxinA, temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause these wrinkles, reducing their appearance and smoothing the skin.

Dr. Gross and Eileen are experienced injectors who conservatively administer BOTOX Cosmetic precisely where it's needed. At Primera Plastic Surgery, we use BOTOX to treat the following aesthetic concerns:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow's feet
  • Forehead creases
  • Neck bands
  • Laugh lines

The human face has more than 50 muscles. Because BOTOX removes wrinkles by preventing muscle contraction, practitioners must know all about the underlying facial muscle anatomy and know which facial muscles to treat with BOTOX in order to achieve the best results and avoid complications. Dr. Gross and Eileen have the knowledge and experience to ensure your safety, create natural results and maintain a normal level of facial expression when performing BOTOX injections.

BOTOX Cosmetic With a Facial Aesthetic Specialist

If you have sun damage, scarring, or areas of excessive pigmentation on your face, your BOTOX injections can be combined with a Fraxel® laser treatment. We may also include BOTOX injections as part of a comprehensive non-surgical facelift treatment plan.

The primary difference between BOTOX and other injectable treatments such as JUVÉDERM®, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC, RADIESSE®, or Restylane® is that BOTOX is not a facial filler. Rather than filling in or plumping up wrinkles to sit flush with the surrounding skin, BOTOX works by limiting the movements of certain muscle groups in the face including the:

  • Frontalis muscle in the forehead
  • Corrugator muscles in and between the eyebrows
  • Orbicularis oculi muscles surrounding the eyes
  • Procerus muscle over the upper nose
  • Orbicularis oris muscles encircling the mouth
  • Depressor anguli oris muscles at the corners of the mouth

We can also treat neck sagging and bands by injecting the thin muscle that drapes from the jaw and down the neck called the platysmal muscle.

BOTOX Treatment Cost

At Primera Plastic Surgery, as well as most other practices, BOTOX is priced by the unit. A "unit" is simply a fixed quantity of the product. There are 100 units in each vial of BOTOX. Although the cost per unit is fixed, each patient requires a different number of units to achieve his or her desired results. Therefore, patients with more significant concerns pay more than patients who wish to treat fairly minor wrinkles. In general, a BOTOX Cosmetic treatment at Primera Plastic Surgery costs anywhere between $300 and $600. During your consultation, we will give you a quote that reflects your specific needs and desired results.

What to Expect

Since we use an extremely small needle, most patients describe BOTOX injections as mildly uncomfortable but not painful. We can make the process even more comfortable by using a highly effective topical anesthetic called BLT to numb your face before beginning the injections. The procedure itself is extremely quick, lasting only a few minutes. For many people, a BOTOX appointment is easy to fit into a workday or an afternoon of errands.

Although BOTOX doesn't require any sort of downtime or healing, it's important to avoid bending, lowering your head, or manipulating your face for the remainder of the day. This allows the product to distribute evenly, and these restrictions don't typically interfere with most daily activities.

Because it takes the active ingredient in BOTOX a few days to have an effect, results develop gradually. While patient experiences vary, BOTOX results typically appear in 5 to 7 days and peak at around 10 days. Many patients say they like the gradual development of results because it is very discreet.

The results of a single BOTOX treatment typically last about 3 or 4 months, sometimes longer. One benefit of getting regular treatments is that they seem to have a cumulative effect for many patients, meaning you may be able to wait longer in between sessions.

"Face muscles are complex, and a thorough understanding of contracting and counterbalancing muscles is needed. This relationship must be understood before injecting BOTOX."

– Dr. Gross

Frequently Asked Questions

As a facial specialist and top distributor of BOTOX Cosmetic, Dr. Edward J. Gross is exceptionally qualified to answer questions about the product, the procedure, and the effects. Here, he and his team have provided answers to some of the most common questions our patients ask about BOTOX Cosmetic.

Is BOTOX Cosmetic safe?

Yes, particularly when it is administered by a facial aesthetic specialist. Any cosmetic procedure comes with inherent risks, but those are minimized by the experience and training of Eileen and Dr. Gross, whose safety records are remarkable. BOTOX's safety is one of the reasons it's frequently the top non-surgical treatment in the country.

Are there any precautions I need to take prior to a BOTOX treatment?

We often advise our patients to avoid certain medications that encourage bleeding in the days before their appointments, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, to keep bleeding and bruising to a minimum at the injection site. Other than that, you don't need to do anything special to prepare for these simple treatments.

Will my results look natural?

Eileen and Dr. Gross advocate a conservative approach when it comes to using BOTOX. With their trained aesthetic eyes and many years of experience, they precisely target very small, specific muscles. They inject just enough BOTOX to achieve the desired correction without causing an "overdone" appearance. This ensures your results are subtle and natural looking and that your face remains expressive.

Can BOTOX Cosmetic be combined with other treatments?

Yes. We frequently use BOTOX in conjunction with dermal fillers such as RADIESSE®, Restylane®, and JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC.

Are there any alternatives to BOTOX?

We offer injections of Dysport®, a product that is very similar to BOTOX Cosmetic. Some patients see better results with one or the other, or a mix of both products. We also offer XEOMIN®, which works in a similar way. As part of your consultation, we will help you decide which product is best suited for your aesthetic goals.

Are there any risks or side effects I should know about?

The most common side effects are minor and are related to the injection site, such as swelling, bruising, and redness. These typically diminish within a day or two, and we offer arnica gel as a temporary remedy to reduce these minor side effects. We also recommend patients take the supplement Arnica 30x®, which helps with bruising and swelling. More serious side effects include a drooping brow or eyelid, but this is extremely rare, particularly in the hands of a facial specialist who has a thorough knowledge of the musculature of the face.

Can BOTOX Cosmetic prevent wrinkles?

Yes. It is becoming more common for patients to begin getting BOTOX injections at younger ages. Because the product limits the activity of the wrinkle-causing muscles, these patients tend to stave off dynamic wrinkles until later ages.

Do the treatments have any other uses?

Before it was a cosmetic treatment, BOTOX was used to treat medical conditions related to overactive muscles. It has been approved by the FDA for a number of medical conditions, such as chronic tension headaches, migraines, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, and muscle spasms near the eyes.
