A Face From an Infomercial
It used to be that a cosmetic surgery patient who was tired of sagging jowls and neck would discreetly ask for names of reputable doctors who did face-lifts. However, Face-lifts are now being marketed nationwide on TV or in infomercials from franchised clinics. Many doctors are concerned that patients may be so persuaded by infomercial advertising that they don't seek a second opinion or investigate the franchise thoroughly. Have there been patient complaints or injuries, are the clinics properly licensed, are there other alternatives to a 'one size fits all' approach?
"Patients should be presented with a range of options during consultation and a 'one size fits all' approach to facial lifting is simply not a good idea. Every patient should have their surgical procedure tailored to their specific needs. Furthermore, "speed in a face lift procedure should never be a criteria to entice patients for surgery", says Dr. Gross.
Here's some advice for those considering face-lifts.
Check whether your surgeon is certified by one of the boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties at abms.org. They require physicians to complete residency training in a specialty and must pass rigorous oral and written exams.
Before you schedule your surgery, meet the surgeon to make sure you're both on the same page. "The best surgeons will give you their honest opinion whether they can achieve your desired results," says Dr. Gross.
Don't settle for a hasty consultation without meeting the doctor. The downside as well as the upside of surgery should be covered.
You should never feel as if you're being sold a procedure. "If you're getting a high-pressure sales pitch for a procedure, personally that would worry me," says Dr. Gross. It never hurts to get a second opinion.
Dr Gross and the ABFRS recommend you thoroughly check out your doctor and the facility before undergoing plastic surgery.
