From Dr. Gross
Ear Reduction Surgery, Otoplasty, is designed to "pin back" protruding ears. Removing excess cartilage from behind the ear and sculpting the outer ear fold, provides a more pleasing appearance and diminishes the affect of ear protrusion.
The surgery is performed through crescent shaped incisions hidden behind the ears and results are permanent.

Commonly Asked Questions
How long does the surgery take, and what type of anesthesia is used?
Otoplasty takes 2 hours depending on the complexity of the ear abnormality. Most patients have general anesthesia. Children almost always general anesthesia. Otoplasty is performed as an outpatient surgery.
Is there a lot of pain afterwards and how long will it last?
This procedure typically is not painful and is associated with mild discomfort. There is discomfort the first night after surgery due to the head dressing. This is removed in the office usually 2 days after the surgery. Patients can expect temporary swelling and bruising of the ears, which last 5 to 7 days. The results are permanent; however, patients must wear a sports style headband during sleep for the first 2 weeks following surgery. Care must be taken to avoid injuring the ears during child's play, wrestling or removing tight fitting collared shirts over the head.
What type of anesthesia do you use?
Most commonly general anesthesia.
Is this an inpatient or outpatient procedure?
This is an Outpatient at Primera Surgery Center 14 yrs and older.
What are the common side effects?
Temporary swelling, bruising around the ears and discomfort. Some drainage and bleeding may occur from the wounds.
What are my risks?
Infection, asymmetry, scarring, re-protrusion of the ear (usually due to popped stitch or trauma).
How long is the recovery time?
Back to work in 5 to 7 days. Return to school in one week.
How long will I enjoy my results?
Permanent. Note: A certain degree of "give" or minor protrusion usually occurs several months following the procedure. This is normal.
